9 The Unproductive Deduction

“STUPID, STUPID, STUPID,” NOAH SAID, shaking his head. He shoved the empty bag back into the cubby. “I should’ve held on to it the entire time.”

For the first time, I wasn’t happy to see one of those goblins disappear. We’d actually had a shot at finding out who was behind those things, and now that shot was gone.

“I’ll ask around,” Noah said. “Can you think of anyone else who stashed one?”

I shook my head. “I have no idea.”

I tried to think back to everyone who had actually enjoyed those things, especially at the beginning when everyone pulled them off their lockers and carried them around. And knowing the kind of students at the academy, we probably weren’t the first ones to try to take one apart. I wonder if any of those curious students had their goblin mysteriously vanish like ours.

Then I remembered the very first time I had seen a goblin.

“Wait a minute,” I told him. “I think I might know where one is.”

I told Noah about my time in Ms. Ramos’s office and the goblin I spotted there.

“But that was like a whole day before everyone else had one,” Noah pointed out. “Are you sure it was the same thing?”

“Oh yeah,” I said. “And remember when I told you how I wanted to invent something to save lives?”

“Yeah?” Noah asked.

“Well, I first got the idea in her office,” I explained. “And then the next day, in algebra class, when a bunch of people had those goblins, I thought I heard someone making fun of me. Saying exactly what I had said in the nurse’s office.”

Noah’s eyes widened. “That thing recorded you!”

“I think so,” I agreed. “And another one played back my words later in algebra class.”

“Sheesh,” Noah said, rubbing his head. “No wonder they creep you out.”

“Right?” I said.

“So…” Noah raised an eyebrow. “Do you think she still has it?”

“I don’t know.” I shrugged. “She’s not a student, so maybe she didn’t have to turn it in. And I can’t see the creator being brave enough to swipe it out of her office. Either way, I’ll find out.”

I didn’t have time to stop by her office before lunch period was over, so Noah and I split up, heading out to class, business as usual.

I tried to concentrate on Mrs. Gaines’s lecture as I sat through chemistry class. But I did find myself scoping out the other students’ backpacks, wondering if any of them had stashed one before this last invasion was confiscated.

When the bell rang, I was the first person out the door. I moved through the flow of students and headed for the stairs. I ran down to the first floor (much better than tumbling) and made my way to the nurse’s office.

I knocked on the open door and stepped inside. “Ms. Ramos?”

She wasn’t there.

I moved toward her desk. I spotted the photos of her kids, but I didn’t see the goblin. I crouched down to see if it had fallen to the floor. I half expected it to be staring back at me as it hid behind dust bunnies and computer cables.
